“Each year, more and more studies confirm the fact that eating meat…can greatly increase…chances of developing conditions such as high cholesterol, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.” (“Nutrition and Staying Healthy” 2) Diets that include meat are linked to higher risk of diseases. Studies have shown that by being a vegetarian, a healthier life can be attained. In order to live a healthy life, people must be vegetarian. Many people think that to get all essential nutrients, eating meat is necessary. Also, iron from animals is not as healthy as iron acquired from a vegetarian diet. The iron from meat is called “heme-iron” and has been seen to “[increase] risk of colon and rectal cancer” (“Should people become vegetarian?” 2). Vegetarians also have better glycemic control as an increase of “whole grains, legumes, nuts, and soy proteins” (“Should people become vegetarian?” 2) in their diets which reduces chances of diabetes. By being a vegetarian, people are more likely to avoid kidney stones. Studies have shown “diets high in animal protein cause the body to excrete calcium, oxalate, and uric acid – the main components of kidney and gallstones.” (“Should people become vegetarian?” 2) By getting protein from a source other than animals, vegetarians can worry less about kidney or gallstones. Also by being vegetarian, it facilitates a healthier living environment. Animals being raised for food contribute majorly to greenhouse gas emission. These animals “create 18% of global greenhouse gases” (“Should people become vegetarian?” 3) because of the harmful gases they emanate from enteric fermentation. The Advantages of a Vegetarian Diet

Having a healthy dietary method can reduce the chances of receiving many health diseases. These health diseases include obesity, heart disease, and cancer. By consuming certain foods and nutrients in one’s diet the risk factors for these health diseases can be reduced. A healthy dietary method that is beneficial to reducing and/or improving these health diseases is the vegetarian diet. The vegetarian diet follows a dietary pattern that is characterized by the consumption of plant-like foods and the avoidance of flesh foods (meat, poultry, and fish). Vegetarian diets have also been linked to reducing heart disease. Heart disease is another common chronic disease. A contributing factor that can lead to a person having heart disease is hypertension (also referred to as high blood pressure). Factors that lead to hypertension include having high levels of fats and cholesterol in one’s diet. Vegetarian diets have low intakes of total fat, saturated fatty acids, and cholesterol. Since the vegetarian diet is lower in cholesterol and fats the chances for hypertension is decreased. Hypertension is just one cause that can lead to heart disease; the main cause of heart disease is due to having high levels of cholesterol. High cholesterol is an indicator that a person is consuming a high amount of animal products that contain cholesterol and saturated fat. Vegetarians consume lower levels of cholesterol in their diet. The vegetarian diet contains high amounts of soy, nuts, oats, and vegetables, all of which have been found to reduce cholesterol. Another reason why the vegetarian diet reduces heart disease lies in the fact that it contains high levels of antioxidants. Antioxidants include essential nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotenes which all help to minimize the damage that could occur in cells.
